Overview of Alloy 430 Stainless Steel Pipe

430 Stainless is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade, combining good corrosion resistance and formability characteristics with useful mechanical properties. Its ability to resist nitric acid attack permits its use in specific chemical applications, but automotive trim and appliance components represent its largest fields of application. 430 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance combined with good formability. 430 is very similar to 439 grade stainless steel with slightly less chromium at 16% minimum content. 430 is more oxidation resistant and corrosion resistant than 409 grade. 430 is a popular non-hardenable grade most commonly used in indoor environments. 430 is readily cold formed by bending, deep drawing and stretch forming. 430 is relatively easy to machine and is comparable to that of structural carbon steel requiring the same recommendations regarding tooling, cutting speeds and cutting feeds. 430 can be welded although it may require annealing.

Difference Between 304 and 430 Stainless Steel

One of the most popular grades of ferritic stainless steel with magnetic characteristics is 430. The most popular grade of stainless steel with non-magnetic characteristics is 304. The 430 composition contains iron in composition with less than 1% nickel, up to 18% chromium, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and manganese. With 18% chromium, carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, nitrogen, and iron, the 304 has 8% nickel in its composition.

The 304 materials have a minimum yield strength and tensile strength of 215 MPa and 505 MPa, respectively, thanks to this chemical composition. The minimum yield strength and tensile strength of material 430 are up to 260 MPa and 600 MPa, respectively. 430 has a melting point that can reach 1510 degrees Celsius. Denser than the 430 substance is the 304 material.
