Steel pipes come in many forms and sizes. Seamless pipe is a non-welded option, made of hollowed steel billet. When it comes to welded steel pipes, there are three options: ERW, LSAW and SSAW.
ERW pipes are made of resistance welded steel plates. LSAW pipe is made of longitudinal submerged arc welded steel plate. SSAW pipe is made of spiral submerged arc welded steel plate.
Let's take a closer look at each type of pipe, compare their differences, and how to use the correct description to order.
Seamless steel tube
The seamless tube is made of stainless steel billet, which is heated and perforated to form a circular hollow section. Because seamless pipe has no welding area, it is considered to be stronger than welded pipe and less prone to corrosion, erosion and general failure.
However, the cost per ton of seamless pipe is 25-40% higher than that of ERW pipe. Seamless steel pipe sizes range from 1/8 inch to 36 inch.
Resistance welding (ERW) pipe
ERW (resistance welding) steel pipe is formed by rolling steel into pipe and connecting two ends with two copper electrodes. These electrodes are disc-shaped and rotate as the material passes between them. This allows the electrode to maintain continuous contact with the material for a long time of continuous welding. The progress of welding technology continues to improve this process.
ERW pipe is an economical and effective substitute for seamless steel pipe, which is more durable than SAW pipe. Compared with the solvent process used in submerged arc welded pipe, defects are also unlikely to occur, and the straight weld defects can be easily detected by ultrasonic reflection or vision.
The diameter of ERW pipe ranges from inches (15 mm) to 24 inches (21.34 mm).
Submerged arc welded pipe
LSAW (straight seam welding) and SSAW (spiral seam welding) are variants of submerged arc welded pipe. The submerged arc welding process produces high current density to prevent the rapid heat dissipation of the flux layer and concentrate in the welding area.
The main difference between LSAW and SSAW pipes is the direction of the weld, which will affect the pressure bearing capacity and the ease of manufacturing. LSAW is used for medium-voltage to high-voltage applications, and SSAW is used for low-voltage applications. LSAW pipes are more expensive than SSAW pipes.
Longitudinal submerged arc welded pipe
LSAW pipe is made by making the hot rolled coil steel mould into a cylinder and connecting the two ends together by linear welding. This creates a longitudinally welded pipe. These pipelines are mainly used for long-distance transmission pipelines of oil, natural gas, liquid coal, hydrocarbons, etc.
There are two types of LSAW pipes: single longitudinal seam and double seam (DSAW). LSAW steel pipe competes with seamless steel pipe and 16 to 24 inch ERW steel pipe. In the oil and natural gas industry, large-diameter API 5L LSAW pipes are used for long-distance and efficient transportation of hydrocarbons.
The diameter of the LAW pipe is usually between 16 inches and 60 inches (406 mm and 1500 mm).
Seamless - explosive remnants of war - longitudinal submerged arc welding - spiral submerged arc welding - pipeline - spiral submerged arc welding
SSAW pipe
SSAW steel pipe is formed by rolling and welding steel strip in spiral or spiral direction to make the weld into spiral. The spiral welding process makes it possible to manufacture large-diameter products. Spiral steel pipes are mainly used for low pressure fluid transmission, such as pipelines in offshore platforms, petrochemical plants or shipyards, as well as civil buildings and piling.
The pipe diameter range of SSAW is generally 20 inches to 100 inches (406 mm to 25040 mm).
How to order steel pipes for your project
When ordering steel pipes, there are two key dimensions: nominal pipe size (NPS) and wall thickness (schedule). For pipes less than 4 inches, the pipe length can be single random (SRL) 5-7 meters, or for pipes more than 4 inches, the pipe length can be double random (DRL) 11-13 meters. Custom lengths are available for long pipes. Pipe ends can be bevel (be), plane (pe), thread (THD) thread and coupling (T&C) or groove.
Summary of typical order details:
Type (seamless or welded)
Nominal pipe size
Schedule
End type
Material grade
Quantity in meters or feet or tons.
