Cable Construction of Stainless Steel Wire Rope

The greater the number of wires in a strand or cable of a given diameter, the more flexibility it has. A 1×7 or a 1×19 strand, having 7 and 19 wires respectively, is used principally as a fixed member, as a straight linkage, or where flexing is minimal.

Cables designed with 3×7, 7×7 and 7×19 construction provide for increasing degrees of flexibility but decreased abrasion resistance. These designs would be incorporated where continuous flexing is a requirement.

Construction type Description
1x7 Basic strand for all concentric cable, relatively stiff in larger diameters, offers the least stretch. Stiffest construction in small diameters.
1x19 Smooth outside, fairly flexible, resists compressive forces, strongest construction in sizes above 3/32-inch diameter.
7x7 Durable, higher flexibility and abrasion resistance. Good general purpose construction for strength and flexibility. Can be used over pulleys.
7x19 The strongest and most flexible of cables with greatest stretch. Recommended for use over pulleys.

Patterns of Stainless Steel Wire Rope

All wires consist of layer(s) arranged in a specific pattern around a center. Pattern designation is affected by the size of the wires, the number of layers, and the wires per layer. Wires can utilize either a single pattern style or a combination of them, known as a combined pattern:

 Single Layer - A single layer with wires of the same diameter

 Filler Wire - Two layers of uniform-size wire. The inner layer has half the number of wires as the outer layer.

 Seale - Two layers of uniform-size wire and the same number of wires

 Warrington - Two layers of wires. The outer layer has two diameters of wire (alternating between large and small), while the inner layer has one diameter.
