Overview of 304 Stainless Steel Steel Round Bar
304/304L Stainless Steel is an economical grade of stainless that is ideal for all applications where strength and superior corrosion resistance is required. 304 Stainless Round has a durable dull, mill finish that is widely used for all types of fabrication projects that are exposed to the elements - chemical, acidic, fresh water, and salt water environments. 304 Stainless Steel Round Bar is the most widely used of the stainless and heat resisting steels, 304 offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres.

Cold Working of 304 Stainless Steel Bar
304 stainless steel readily hardens. Fabrication methods involving cold working may require an intermediate annealing stage to alleviate work hardening and avoid tearing or cracking. At the completion of fabrication a full annealing operation should be employed to reduce internal stresses and optimise corrosion resistance.
Hot Working of 304 Stainless Steel Bar
Fabrication methods, like forging, that involve hot working should occur after uniform heating to 1149-1260°C. The fabricated components should then be rapidly cooled to ensure maximum corrosion resistance.
Properties of 304 Stainless Steel Bar
304 SS round bar provides good strength and excellent corrosion resistance and formability. Stainless steel 304 round bar is a type of 18/8 stainless steel, but with a higher chromium and lower carbon content. When welded, the lower carbon content minimizes the chromium carbide precipitation content within the metal and decreases its susceptibility to inter-granular corrosion.

Machinability of 304 Stainless Steel Bar
304 has good machinability. Machining can be enhanced by using the following rules:
Cutting edges must be kept sharp. Dull edges cause excess work hardening.
Cuts should be light but deep enough to prevent work hardening by riding on the surface of the material.
Chip breakers should be employed to assist in ensuring swarf remains clear of the work
Low thermal conductivity of austenitic alloys results in heat concentrating at the cutting edges. This means coolants and lubricants are necessary and must be used in large quantities.
